Reliability assessment of cold-formed steel beams by the FORM method

چکیده

This article presents a procedure for the reliability assessment of cold-formed steel beams based on Direct Strength Method (DSM) and Effective Section (ESM). Using comprehensive database, statistical analysis test results was performed to determine properties professional factor random variable. The parameters related material strength, geometric load effects were obtained from established references analysis. Safety levels compatible with North American Brazilian codes relating structural design members have been established. first-order method (FORM) used calculate resistance factors φ usual nominal live-dead ratios. showed that DSM ESM methods similar reliability. same as can be ESM, without compromising minimum level LRFD calibration data, presented good approximation = 0.90, except distortional mode. With LSD values well below specified required in order achieve It also found γ 1.25, format standard, could reach safety requirements all buckling modes.

Local Buckling Tests on Cold-Formed Steel Beams

C and Z sections are two of the most common cold-formed steel shapes in use today. Accurate prediction of the bending performance of these sections is important for reliable and efficient cold-formed steel structures. Recent analytical work has highlighted discontinuities and inconsistencies in the American Iron and Steel Institute ~AISI! and Canadian Standards Association ~S136! design provisi...

Distortional Buckling Tests on Cold-Formed Steel Beams

Failure in cold-formed steel beams is generally initiated by one of three instabilities: local, distortional, or lateral-torsional buckling. For cold-formed steel joists, purlins, or girts, when the compression flange is not restrained by attachment to sheathing or paneling, distortional buckling may be the predominant failure mode. Experimental results on cold-formed steel beams with unrestrai...

On Cold-Formed Steel Construction

Powder-actuated (also referred to as low velocity or powder-driven) fasteners are commonly used to attach cold-formed steel framing members, usually a track, to a concrete or structural steel support. Although commonly used, their behavior is less well understood than other fasteners such as screws, bolts and welds. The AISI Cold-Formed Steel Design Manual does not explicitly address powder act...

Cold-formed steel structures around the world

Today, cold-formed steel (CFS) structures enjoy widespread use in many countries and design specifications, e.g., [1] and [2] are well established, even if they are ever changing! Extensive reviews of the CFS literature are available [3], [4] and more targeted research reviews also exist: [5], [6] and Chapter 13 of [7]. However, even in the last five years significant progress has been made, pa...

Computational Modeling of Cold-formed Steel

The objective of this paper is to summarize recent research and experiences with computational modeling of cold-formed steel conducted within the author’s research group at Johns Hopkins University. This admittedly biased view of computational modeling focuses primarily on the use of the semi-analytical finite strip method and collapse modeling using shell finite elements. Issues addressed incl...
